Unsweetened Applesauce

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

WHY I LOVE THIS RECIPE: I have wonderful memories of making applesauce with my mother and, in more recent years, with 2 of my granddaughters. Part of the fun of making it with my granddaughters was watching them scour the apple section of the store picking out the ones they wanted.

Ingredients

  • 6 lbs apples (mixed or one variety, depending on preference)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 6-inch cinnamon stick

Instructions

  • Slice and core the apples.
  • Put prepared apples in large pot with water and cinnamon stick.
  • Cook covered over medium heat until tender: 15-20 minutes or more, depending on the size and variety of the apples.
  • Remove from heat and use an immersion blender until the applesauce is the consistency you like.
  • Cool to room temperate and refrigerate. Also freezes well.

Notes

You can also finish this recipe by using a potato masher, blender, or food processor.  Or, if you didn't peel the apples before cooking and want to so so afterwards, a food mill works well.
